EBODJE SEA TURTLE ECOTOURISTIC CONSERVATION PROGRAM
Ebodje is a small village located in Southern Cameroon, in the district of Campo, very famous as the most prestigious site where sea turtles nest. This site should bear the only marine park in Cameroon and would help in the conservation of sea turtles, sperm whales, dolphins, and other large marine mammals that visit the Campo coasts.
Ebodje is about 5 km of white sand beach, a privileged site for romantic strolls, a meeting place per excellence for several researchers and tourists interested or working in sea turtles.
Fishing activity is predominant there and is carried out by residents who very often accidentally capture these mammals (Bycatch).
Global Environment Protects (GEP) has been working there for more than 10 years with local communities on ecotourism and sea turtle conservation programs. We have initiated environmental education programs with young primary school students, then programs awareness-raising in households to encourage local residents to use these opportunities that nature offers to them, to improve their livelihood standard while conserving these animals in a sustainable manner.
It is in order to preserve this rich biodiversity that GEP organizes an ecotourism trip to this site every year to allow participants to discover this rich biodiversity, to learn about conservation programs through night patrols, during which the eggs sea turtles are collected and incubated in artificial hatcheries. The resulting small turtles are taken to the sea, protected from predators and poachers.
